What is demonology?

In religious studies, demonology is the study of demons and related beliefs. Britannica frames it inside religion. Wikipedia's summary says the same field. The Roblox game borrowed the word. The rules of that game are on the home page, not here.

Meaning and historical context

Demonology describes writing and study about demons: their supposed identities, origins and roles within religious or mythological traditions. A historian can study these beliefs without affirming that the beings exist. The term is therefore not interchangeable with evidence-based diagnosis, a medical explanation, or the fictional rules of a horror game.

Different traditions use different categories for spirits and harmful supernatural beings. Christian demonology is one specific branch, not a universal taxonomy that can be imposed on all religions. This page is a brief orientation to the term, not advice to perform rituals or a claim to settle religious questions.

Reading Daemonologie in context

James VI of Scotland, later James I of England, published Daemonologie in 1597. Project Gutenberg provides an accessible transcription in three books: Book I concerns magic and necromancy; Book II considers witchcraft and sorcery; Book III discusses spirits and apparitions. Refer to those book headings rather than a page number, because ebook pagination varies.

Read it as a historical primary source reflecting an early-modern ruler’s beliefs and the persecution of accused witches, not as a modern manual or scientific authority. The digitized text and bibliographic record are linked below; this site does not rehost an edition or claim ownership of it.

Books, access, and scope

A bibliographic catalogue entry is not permission to reproduce a book, and a downloadable file is not automatically public domain in every country. The Gutenberg entry identifies the text as public domain in the United States; readers elsewhere should consider their local copyright rules. This page does not offer pirated PDFs.
